Self care during this challenging time

I have talked about self care before but in the light of the current pandemic and worsening stress everyone is feeling, I thought it important to go over coping once again.

Coping skills can be anything that make you feel better.. You are probably already doing things that make you feel good and help you get through tough times. But now that we are stuck at home and away from many of the things that make us feel good— it is EVEN MORE important now to do things to self care.

Here are some things you can do at home:

  • build a pillow/blanket fort

  • go for a walk around your neighborhood/home

  • dance to your favorite song

  • start a project you have not had time for until now

  • organize and clean your space

  • color a coloring book

  • draw a picture

  • pet your animal

  • call a loved one

  • work on a puzzle

  • read a book

  • start a new video game

  • watch movies

  • binge watch that show you have been wanting to for weeks now

  • journal— process your feelings and document this ever-changing time

  • limit social media and news as it can worsen your stress

  • listen to music

  • take pictures

  • scrapbook

  • try yoga

  • exercise (even if it is running up and down your stairs or taking a walk)

  • paint your nails

  • have a ‘spa’ day at home

  • light your favorite candle

  • put on your favorite smelling lotion

  • cook something special for yourself to enjoy

  • bake something delicious

There are so many things to try! Next time you start to feel anxious or sad or stuck, pick something on this list (or make your own) and see if it makes you feel better. You might have to do a few before you notice a difference. Even a small amount of relief is valuable.
