Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start the process?

You can go to the contact page and fill out the form to get started. You can also contact me by phone at (865) 470-4256 or email me at stefanie.hynds@stepswithstefanie.com.

What should I expect for my first appointment?

The first appointment is called an ‘intake’ and we spend the time getting to know each other. I will ask you questions about your history, support system, medical and mental health problems, medication, and the issues that brought you to therapy.

We will also brainstorm goals you have for therapy and create a ‘treatment plan’ together. At the end of the session we will decide how frequently we want to meet (weekly, bimonthly, monthly), and go over any questions/concerns you may have.

What do I need to do for the first appointment?

Just like most first time appointments, there are some client intake forms that need to be completed before I can start providing therapy to you. Forms are available through the client portal and need to be completed prior to first appointment.

What is your education/credentials?

I graduated from UT Knoxville with a Masters in Social work. I then pursued licensure and am now a Licensed Clinical Social worker through the state of TN. My TN LCSW license number is 6650. My NH LICSW license number is 4916.

What kind of therapy do you provide?

Every person is unique and therefore your therapy will be different and unique. Together we will decide what you want to do in sessions (talking, learning skills, activities). I might determine that you would benefit from practicing skills or taking home ‘homework’ to work on.

Typically, I provide a mix of different therapy styles depending on the presenting issue and what you find most helpful. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral therapy (CBT), Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), Mindfulness and relaxation techniques, Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT), Sandtray, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, Solution focused therapy, Strengths based therapy, Client centered therapy, and Narrative therapy.

Are you a LGBT+ affirming?

Yes! I am a LGBTQ+ ally and affirming therapist. I have experience with clients pre/post transition and clients that identify as non binary, gay, lesbian, bisexual, genderqueer, and asexual. Your gender and sexuality are an important part of who you are and I hope to provide a safe, accepting environment for you be your true self in.

What is your work experience?

I have experiences working with all ages during my time in the mental health field. I worked in foster care and forensic social work providing services for clients in the justice system. I spent almost 4 years working as a mobile crisis clinician helping clients in crisis find resources and services to get stable and healthy. Most recently I have ventured into therapy and worked briefly in a group practice before deciding to start my own private practice therapy.
